About Hauntlet

Hauntlet; ok so I had this idea years ago and ties in with my desire to recycle, upcycle and create new products from old waste. My primary goal was to use old Apple parts and materials, Apple often use quality materials and I’ve always been a fan of their products (since the 90s so before they were trendy!) so I’ve upcycled some Mac Pro doors, Mac mini motherboards and cases, Heatsinks and CPUs and now I’m recycling some of the metal, or will be once my final master prototype gets finished

In the mean time I’ve also decided to make some accessories, these I intend for my own ghost or Hauntlet as I’ve named it. But as its proving a lot more technical to melt aluminium (obtained from the old Macs and PCs) so in the mean time I’m using some reclaimed pewter with a much lower melting temperature to make these items. Don’t worry this isn’t old reclaimed pewter with lead content but a more modern mix with tin still being the main element but other metals added to the mix to make it easier to flow and cast

Initial stock will be small and select and hopefully later there will be other variations, accessories and items available as I get into the swing of casting and tinkering with various ideas

Eco; So as I am upcycling and trying to make good of old and disguarded equipment I also need to get my act together and practice what I preach. I’m therefore looking into recycled, or recyclable packaging, eco bubble wrap, packing tape and not using single use plastic or anything like that. I’m not sure on the eco credentials of any courier I’ll use but again I’m looking into it and will try and source one who is at least having a go at an environmentally friendly transit service or aiming for carbon neutrality. Most of the materials will be from the donor machine(s) but there may be a few other parts sourced from hardware stores or on eBay, but these will be in the minority, at least 90% of all products should be upcycled or recycled parts

The master moulds I make are from 3D printed designs, not all are 3D printed or fully printed, as there are some limitations on my design skills and mastery of 3D CAD Tools so I also hand carve or hand embellish many of the designs. For the printing I use PLA, this is a ‘plastic type’ filament actually made from corn starch and is fully bio-degradable. I looked into this before purchasing a 3D printer as I knew there would be mistakes and bad prints and I didn’t want to be throwing lots of plastic away and adding to landfill or the plastic floating around the oceans forever. Once I found out it was based on corn starch and bio-degradable I thought great, so all my mistakes go to the local recycling, and in the future when I cast aluminium from the lost PLA method that melted down PLA will also go to recycling and be rotted down, I assume with garden waste etc
